If you’ve cruised the ocean but never sailed a European river, you’re missing something special. River cruising offers an intimate, destination-focused experience that feels more like a floating boutique hotel than a massive ship. AmaWaterways has built a reputation as one of the top river cruise lines in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Here’s what you actually need to know before booking.

The Service That Sets AmaWaterways Apart

Service quality matters when you’re spending a week on a ship. AmaWaterways has earned its reputation by going above and beyond for guests.

The cruise manager is your main contact throughout the trip. This person doesn’t just manage your cruise. They also handle any pre or post land extensions you book. They make sure your daily excursions run smoothly, review details about upcoming tours while on board, and set up evening entertainment as the ship sails to the next destination.

Think of the cruise manager as the heart of the ship. They create a friendly environment where you can meet and mingle with other cruisers. They make you laugh. They make you feel welcome. When you have questions or need something, this is your go-to person.

The hotel manager ensures your stateroom is cleaned and serviced each day. Any questions about your room go to this person.

The chef and culinary team deserve special mention. AmaWaterways is one of the first cruise lines to join the prestigious La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Culinary Society. That’s not just marketing talk. The food quality reflects this commitment.

Other staff round out the experience. The wellness manager leads daily exercises. Salon and massage staff are available for pampering. The front desk team handles every question and welcomes you back from daily excursions.

Planning Your Itinerary

Your itinerary drives the entire experience. Most people book river cruises because they want to see specific places.

Maybe you’ve dreamed of seeing castles dotted along the Rhine River Gorge. Maybe you want to visit Monet’s home and the beaches of Normandy in France. Maybe you just want to soak up the Douro River Valley in Portugal.

The Danube River offers another popular route through multiple European countries.

Working with a travel agency that specializes in river cruising helps. Eagle Adventures (936-756-1217) focuses specifically on AmaWaterways sailings. During your first discussion, you’ll share which country or river interests you most. From there, they provide detailed itinerary information and help with stateroom selection. They work only with US and Canadian citizens and include an extra amenity as a thank you gift. They’re located near Houston, Texas, which is Central Standard Time.

How Excursions Actually Work

The port stops make each itinerary special. AmaWaterways offers three to five excursions at each European port stop.

Professional guides with extensive knowledge lead these tours. If a drive is required, comfortable motor coaches take you to your destination. Your guide starts their presentation as you drive along scenic routes.

Here’s the best part: excursions are complimentary. They’re included in your cruise fare. No nickel and diming you over special tours you want to take.

AmaWaterways offers three categories to accommodate different activity levels.

Active guests can hike to a castle or ride a bike along the river to rejoin the ship. Bikes and helmets are complimentary. You can even check out bikes at city centers and do your own independent tour.

Regular walkers explore city centers and favorite spots with tour guides on foot.

Gentle walkers make it to must-see locations by taking the shortest path from the ship or by minivan.

After each excursion, you get free time on your own. This is when you can shop in Vienna, take pictures to share with friends, or stroll a little longer in Monet’s Garden.

Understanding Stateroom Categories

Four main categories exist: fixed windows, French balconies, twin balconies, and suites. All come with a queen bed that converts into two twin beds if needed.

Fixed Window Staterooms

If you’ve sailed on an ocean cruise, you might think of this as an ocean view room. But there’s a major difference on a river.

You’re actually sailing in a stateroom at the level of the water or slightly lower. The window gives your room plenty of light, but your view is mostly blue sky. This entry-level room runs about 160 to 170 square feet. Perfect for a solo cruiser.

One thing to know: you’ll hear the noise of the ship pushing through water at night. Most cruisers are okay with this. People sensitive to noise might need earplugs, which is very common. Or explore options on deck 2 for a quieter stateroom.

French Balcony Staterooms

These C category rooms sit on decks 2 and 3. They’re typically 170 square feet with a sliding glass door that opens up. Once open, you can lean against four horizontal rails and enjoy the scenery.

French balcony rooms allow outside air into your room. You get plenty of light and beautiful river views.

These staterooms are located at the back of the ship. If you book on deck 2, you might hear engine noise at night. If that’s going to be a problem, consider moving midship to the twin balcony staterooms.

Twin Balcony Staterooms

These rooms have both a French balcony sliding door and a step-out balcony.

The B category twin balcony rooms are 210 square feet. The BB rooms sit on deck 2. The BA rooms sit on deck 3. BA rooms run about $200 per person more than the BBs.

The A category twin balcony staterooms are 235 square feet. The AB rooms are on deck 2 and the AA rooms are on deck 3, both midship. These are very comfortable for two passengers.

Suites

Suites measure 350 square feet. The bathrooms are much larger with double sinks compared to one sink in other staterooms. These bathrooms also have a separate bathtub and shower. The seating area is larger, offering extra luxury for high-end guests.

The Double-Wide Ships

AmaWaterways has one ship on the Danube River called the AmaMagna that’s double wide. A second double-wide ship called the AmaRudy arrives in 2027 as a sister ship to the AmaMagna.

These ships are twice the size of a single-wide ship with only 30 additional guests. That means more spacious common areas without sacrificing the intimate feel.

Onboard Amenities

Single-wide ships typically have a sun deck with a heated pool, walking track, large chess set, and games. Deck 3 holds staterooms and the lounge. Deck 2 has staterooms and the main dining room. Fixed window staterooms sit on the lower deck.

The fitness room offers equipment for workouts. The wellness manager leads daily exercise classes. Massage and salon services are available.

The lounge area always has tapas and juice available. Evening entertainment arranged by the cruise manager keeps things interesting. The library has games. A gift shop sells necessities and souvenirs. A self-serve coffee and hot chocolate bar sits near the gift shop.

Wi-Fi is complimentary and included in your cruise price. The connection is stable, reliable, and reasonably fast, especially near European city centers. You can upload personal pictures to social media in the evenings without problems.

The Food Experience

Food can make or break a cruise. AmaWaterways food is exceptional.

The head chef and pastry chef guide the culinary team to ensure high-quality dining at each meal.

Each morning before your first excursion, head to the main dining room for a buffet breakfast. Eggs, meats, cheeses, pastries, yogurts, fruit, and more fill the tables. If you’d rather order à la carte off the breakfast menu, feel free to do so.

After your morning excursion, come back to the ship for lunch. Lunch is a five-course meal with appetizers, soup, salad, a main dish, and dessert. Wine, beer, and soft drinks are complimentary, along with juices, teas, and coffee.

Come back in the evenings to the dining room for another five-course meal with suggestions from the chef. Wine and beer are complimentary again.

The best meal of the week is the chef’s table. It’s complimentary with no surcharge. You can dress up a little, but no formal wear is required. Come really hungry. The chef has a demonstration kitchen and prepares a tasting menu that will delight your taste buds.

One note about drinks: complimentary drinks are available 1 hour before dinner. If you order from the bar any other time, the drink comes with a charge to your room.

Gratuity Guidelines

AmaWaterways leaves tipping to your discretion. The dollar amount fluctuates with the value of the US and Canadian dollar to the euro. Here are some guidelines.

The ship’s crew consists of the captain, hotel manager, chef, and their teams. It’s recommended to tip €150 per person for a seven-night cruise. This money divides evenly between all staff.

The cruise manager is not part of the ship’s crew. The recommendation is €30 for a seven-night cruise. If you take a pre or post land extension, add €5 per day.

You have two payment options. First, two envelopes will be placed in your stateroom near the end of the cruise. One for the ship’s crew and one for the cruise manager. Put your euros in the envelopes and return them to the reception desk.

Second, if you prefer to charge gratuities to your credit card, visit the reception desk.

You can prepay gratuities at final payment if you don’t want to worry about it while traveling. Eagle Adventures has prepaid gratuities on select sailings. Ask about amenities they can provide for your sail date.

If a crew member made your trip especially memorable, don’t hesitate to slip them an extra €10 or 20 individually as a thank you.

Company History and Growth

Three families started AmaWaterways back in 2002. They’re not a large conglomerate. The co-owners Rudi Schreiner, Kristin Karst, and Jimmy Murphy have delivered a luxury river cruise experience with personal touches.

In 2025, Rudi stepped down from his role as CEO but remains very involved with AmaWaterways. The company also acquired investors to help with growth opportunities.

AmaWaterways keeps adding new ships. In 2025, the AmaCentro joined the AmaDuro in Portugal. The AmaSophia debuts on the beautiful Danube River in 2026.

The company does a great job incorporating feedback from cruisers. Even the owners read your comments and are always striving to deliver the best river cruise experience possible.

Fair Warnings Before You Book

AmaWaterways does not have casinos on board. If you select cruises because you want to try your hand at blackjack or slot machines, keep that in mind.

Some years the rivers can be low at the end of summer. When rivers are low, the first vessels to have problems are barges moving cargo. AmaWaterways has the lowest drafting ships on European rivers. When other vendors start to have problems, AmaWaterways can still manage the rivers.

Close your curtains at night. River cruise ships pull right up into city centers. If your curtains aren’t closed, that person riding their bike to work might see you getting out of bed in the morning.

River cruise ships are often tethered together. If you wake up with another ship literally 3 to 5 feet from you, you can see into their stateroom and them into yours. Close your curtains each night.

AmaWaterways allows children four and up on board. It’s very rare to see anyone under 18 years old. There are no children’s activities. Young people must participate in adult excursions and activities. They must stay with you at all times.

One example: a 10-year-old grandson enjoyed the Enchanting Rhine cruise. He was able to enjoy the pool and large chess set on the top deck, the games in the library, and loved all the excursions. If you bring someone young, make sure they can sit for 2-hour dinners in the evenings and that they’re well-behaved.
